Initial List of Projects for CS395T,
Mining and Monitoring Databases
For each of these ideas I will supply the starting pointers
to the relevant reading.
- World-Wide Herbarium: An herbarium is a collection of plant
specimens. Much like the effort to put book libraries' card catalogs
on-line and then on the net, herbariums are starting to on-line catalogs.
However, a critical difference among herbariums and book libraries is that
there is substantial information on the "card" for a plant specimen. In
particular where and when the specimen was collected, who collected it
and field notes. Thus, the integration of on-line herbariums into a
single virtual database promises to be a tool of extraordinary value
for botanists. Last year, in CS386 Database Management, 30 students
successfully queried and integrated results from multiple herbarium sites.
This year the "default project" will be a refinement of last year's effort.
