Class content
The second part of the class consists of individual introductions to research. Each student will make contact with one or more faculty members by the end of the first part. This faculty member (or these faculty members) will then direct the student to research group meetings or will otherwise supervise them for the rest of the semester. The faculty member may also assign some other activity consistent with the end objective of getting the student started on research, such as reading research papers. The final product of this research introduction is a research plan for the second CS396 in the Spring.

Requirements
The grading for the course is Pass/Fail. The assignments listed below are required to get a passing grade. Each of these should be emailed to the coordinator before the due date, and will be approved by the coordinator.

Oct 11: A description of research interests, together with names of 3 potential faculty mentors.
Oct 25: A plan for the remainder of the semester, approved by the selected faculty mentor.
Dec 8: A written 3-5 page proposal for a research project for the second cs396 (in the Spring), approved by the selected faculty mentor.

Resources
The coordinator will be available for advising throughout the semester, but especially for the selection of the three potential mentors. Students are encouraged to start on the second part before the completion of the presentation series. The Research Groups web pages and the Faculty Home pages are a good source of information about faculty interests, as is the Annual Report.
