CS103F: Ethical Foundations of Computer Science

• GitHub. In 2014, Julie Hovarth, a well-known programmer, quit GitHub among allegations of a decidedly unwelcome environment. As you consider this event, these resources may help you:

  • Farberov, Snejana. High-profile female programmer quits GitHub after series of harassment allegations emerge against the open-source start-up, Daily Mail, March 16, 2014.
• Uber. In 2017, several female engineers left Uber and made public allegations of a(nother) decidely unwelcoming environment. As you consider these events, these resources may help you:

As you contemplate the alleged culture at GitHub and Uber, consider how that culture developed, how it was allowed to continue, and how it might change. In particular, consider any ethical issues and biases at play.
