Course Syllabus

Please find the complete course policies in the syllabus. I've highlighted the most essential ones here.

Post-Class Discussion

We will be using Ed Discussions for class discussion. The system is highly catered to getting you help fast and efficiently from classmates, the TA, and instructor. Rather than emailing questions to the teaching staff, we encourage you to post your questions on Ed Discussions.

Grading Policy

Class participation and attendance - 10%
Homework - 40%
Final Project - 50%

Attendance is mandatory. Send a note if you are unable to attend a class session.

Project Component

A significant component of this course (50% of the final grade) corresponds to practical application of the learned concepts in the form of a project. Students will select a project topic and scope in collaboration with the course staff. The final project grade will be determined by evaluating the quality of deliverables (proposal, checkins, final report, code) as well as each student's effort. Research is an inherently non-linear and uncertain process, so we will be flexible in grading the projects. The most important criteria is maintaining a strong effort throughout the project and exhibiting high "velocity" -- trying things out, thinking critically, being creative, and executing quickly.

Homework Assignments

The students will be assigned problem sets. Collaboration is encouraged but the work you submit must be entirely your own. Discussion is permitted but the solution must be written by each student individually without consulting the work of other students. The answers to the homework assignments are due at 11:59 pm of the deadline. Late work is penalized 10% every 24 hours.

Be mindful of the academic honesty policies outlined in the syllabus above.
