Streams

Conceptually, a stream is a string of characters of arbitrary length. Some programs are written as if they operate on infinite streams; for example, the user's input can be treated as a stream that is still being produced.

Streams can be used:

• for input and output ports

• for communication between two programs, either on the same computer or on different computers.
