Goal Testing:
The restrictions on the generation of structures by the
search process are so strict that only a few dozen
potential goal nodes are generated in most cases.
Another set of rules (which simulate the behavior of
molecules in a mass spectrometer) is used to predict the
mass spectrum for each potential goal structure. All
possible structures whose predicted spectrum
reasonably matches the input spectrum are returned as
answers.
Uses of DENDRAL:
- Determining unknown molecular structures.
- Checking previously published structures.
- META-DENDRAL infers new rules from the
structures found by DENDRAL. These rules have
been published, thus contributing to the science
of mass spectrometry.
