Fourth image is a brain scan. Fifth image is a graduating student holding a UT folder with What Starts Here Changes the World on it.

03/24/2025 - Computing Across Disciplines is a three-part series that explores the interdisciplinary programs at UT that are shaping the future of computer science. For many students, computer science isn't just about writing code. It’s about exploring how technology intersects with their passions in areas such as history, business, linguistics, and neuroscience.

03/06/2025 - A $5 million matching gift from venture capitalist Bill Gurley will help establish Texas Robotics’ new undergraduate degree program at UT Austin as a national leader. Launching in Fall 2025, the program is the first in the U.S. to admit freshmen directly and has already drawn over 3,500 applications for just 50 spots. Gurley’s investment will fund research opportunities, experiential learning, and state-of-the-art lab upgrades, ensuring UT remains at the forefront of robotics education and innovation.

02/26/2025 - As a member of the founding cohort of the Texas Honors Computer Science and Business (Texas CSB) program and its first student association president, 2021 alumnus Kevin Qi played a key role in shaping the program. After graduation, he joined Salesforce’s Associate Product Manager program, where he is nearing completion of the program. Qi spoke with UT Computer Science about the lessons he carried from college, his career path, and his advice for the next generation of students.

‘To do things they hadn't even thought of’: Senior Turing Scholar publishes second computer science research paper

10/01/2024 - Computer Science and Mathematics senior Alan Baade really enjoys spending hours on problems.Especially the particularly hard ones, he said. Spending 40 hours on one equation with a small break for sleep somewhere in the middle is rewarding to him.“I think it's because you can tell at the end of this you are going to understand the material,” Baade said.  “You're going to understand computers.”

09/05/2024 - The University of Texas at Austin has introduced what is believed to be the first undergraduate robotics program in the country that allows high school students to apply directly as part of their freshman admissions application. The honors program will integrate students as soon as they arrive on campus into the immersive and interdisciplinary curriculum, which includes hands-on research, engineering and computer science coursework, and participation in UT’s top-ranked Texas Robotics’ events and programs.

Exploring Annotator Rationales for Active Learning with Transformers

Filtering data in transformers

12/14/2022 - For decades, natural language processing (NLP) has provided methods for computers to understand language in a way that mimics humans. Since they are built on transformers, complex neural network layers, these large language models' decision making processes are usually incomprehensible to humans and require large amounts of data to be trained properly. In the past, researchers have tried to remedy this by having models explain their decisions by providing rationales, short excerpts of data that contributed most to the label.

Longhorn Startup Venture Acquired in Multimillion Dollar Deal

Longhorn Startup Success Story - Octoshop

11/30/2022 - Longhorn Startup is a unique program at UT Austin where undergraduate students earn real course credit while simultaneously building their own start-up under the mentorship of established entrepreneurs. One such start-up created by UT Computer Science alumni was recently obtained by Ibotta in a multi-million-dollar acquisition deal.

The Importance of Ethics in Computer Science

02/18/2022 - Co-written by Bettina Mateo and Lauren Cotton As society’s reliance on technology increases, computer scientists are now placed at the forefront of new and unique ethical decisions. However, most computer science curriculums don’t require a substantial education in ethics. This can be a troubling thought since a lack of educational discussion on ethical issues can lead scientists to be unaware of the consequences and repercussions of their creations.
